Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons active dry yeast
Wet Ingredients
  • 1.75 cups warm water Make sure the water is warm to properly activate the yeast.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, mix the yeast and warm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, and sugar.
  3. Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and stir until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
Baking
  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
  2. Punch down the dough and divide it into two pieces. Roll each piece into a long loaf shape.
  3. Place the loaves on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  4. Make several diagonal slashes on top of each loaf.
  5. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and crusty.
  6. Let cool before slicing. Enjoy your artisan baguette!

Notes

Use warm water to activate the yeast properly. Knead your dough thoroughly for a good texture. Allow the baguette to cool completely before slicing to maintain its shape. For an extra crispy crust, place a pan of water in the oven as it preheats.
