Ingredients

Main ingredients
  • 1 lb Ground turkey Lean option for a healthier chili.
  • 1 can Kidney beans Rinsed and drained.
  • 1 can Black beans Rinsed and drained.
  • 1 can Diced tomatoes Can use fire-roasted for extra flavor.
  • 1 Onion, chopped Yellow or white onion works well.
  • 1 Bell pepper, chopped Any color is fine, but red adds sweetness.
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced Fresh garlic enhances flavor significantly.
  • 2 tsp Chili powder Adjust according to heat preference.
  • 1 tsp Cumin Essential for that authentic chili taste.
  • Salt and pepper Enhance flavors to your liking.
  • 2 cups Chicken broth Can substitute with vegetable broth.
  • Olive oil For sautéing; can use vegetable oil as an alternative.

Method

Preparation
  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add chopped onions and bell peppers, and sauté until softened, about 5 to 7 minutes.
  2. Add the minced garlic and ground turkey to the pot. Cook until the turkey is browned, breaking it into small pieces with a spoon, about 10 minutes.
  3. Stir in chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper. Ensure that the spices evenly coat the meat and vegetables.
  4. Pour in the diced tomatoes, kidney beans, black beans, and chicken broth. Stir well to combine all ingredients.
  5. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer for about 30-40 minutes.
  6. Serve the turkey chili hot, garnished with your favorite toppings such as cheese, sour cream, or chopped scallions.

Notes

Use fresh spices for the best flavor; old spices can lose potency over time. Consider adding sugar to balance acidity from tomatoes if needed. For a smokier flavor, incorporate a touch of smoked paprika. Customize the heat with chopped jalapeños or hot sauce. Toppings like avocado, cilantro, or lime wedges add freshness.
